Soul Searching in Daggett, CA

Shot with an Olympus OM-4 with a Zuiko MC Auto-W 1:2 f=35mm, and a Zuiko Auto-W 21mm f/3.5 on Kodacolor 200.

Soul searching, I mean literally, looking for someone at this juncture near Route 66. It was pretty much empty except a few cars passing by, though there is a school that looks to be still in use and an old post office with its flag still waving in the air. Those were the only signs of life in this town near Calico. I was alone when I took these. I think this is the best time to photograph–when traveling alone. I get more done without having to think about the family waiting. I drove around town  and found some dunes and islands of tumbleweeds on dry cracked sands. I didn’t dare park near the soft dunes as I saw remnants of tire tracks where a car had gotten stuck. The temperature was in the high 90s and the air was dry as a bone.

Fourth of July

Shot with a Fujifilm GA645 Super EBC Fujinon 60mm f/4 with flash on Fuji Pro 400H.

Last 4th of July my kids and their friend lit up some “quiet” fireworks to help entertain the holiday festivities. Even in near darkness, the GA645 can still focus with sharp accuracy while only a few shots missing its target (in part because of the fast moving flares from the sparklers threw it off a bit). This is my go to camera when shooting at night or near dark places because the auto focus really does work as well as the built-in metering. I just set the camera on aperture priority and pop open the flash and the results are amazing.

Beautiful Trees

Shot with an Olympus OM-4 with a Zuiko Auto-W 28mm 1:2 on Kodacolor 200.

When I take my walks I almost always photograph the trees I come upon. I am enthralled by the beauty of trees. I sometimes wonder, if trees can only talk, what would they say about their history? Season after season, colors turn and then fall and then return again. What’s it like to be in the same place for the rest of their lives, sitting patiently still in whatever kind of weather?
