Practice

Canon 1Ds Mk II, Canon EF 50mm 1.4. The camera was set to Av mode where I control the aperture and the camera chooses my shutter speed. I set the aperture to f/2.8 to get relative sharpness all around. I shot this directly overhead so as not to have any shallow depth of field. Also shooting at larger apertures got rid of the vignetting. f/4 would have done a better job but at this time of the day, light was limited. The sun had dropped behind the trees before I attempted this shot. I dialed down the exposure compensation to -2/3 because it was important to me to expose the white golf balls correctly. If I kept the exposure bias on zero, then the artificial turf would be quite brighter, over exposed even, while the golf balls would simply be unrecognizably blank and lacking any detail.

Ready, Set, Tango

These are from a wedding I shot that didn’t quite make the “cut” as one would say. Although I love the colors of Fuji’s 400H, it’s too slow for low lighting like in these shots. If I recall, these were about 1/8 sec. to 1/4 sec. exposures wide open.  I used a Contax 645 with a Carl Zeiss Planar 2/80 T*. These two shots were all that were in focus or without motion blur. I’ve got steady hands but even I can’t shoot at 1/4 sec.

Kodak Portra 160 NC

Olympus OM2, Zuiko 85mm f/2.0, Kodak Portra 160NC. I like the finer grain of this film and its rendering of skin tones. My son loves to dress up on occasions and sometimes in costume or in this case a suit he inherited from cousins.  His composure and demeanor reminds me of a newspaper photojournalist from the 1920s perhaps bearing a Graflex Speed Graphics in hand.

Summer Day at the Pool

Olympus OM4, Zuiko 85mm f/2.0, Illford XP2 Super 400 Black & White film. I like using this film for my black and whites because of its ease of use. Although rated at ISO 400, I shoot this at 200 ISO.  And because it’s a color process black and white film it’s very forgiving. The dynamic range between my highlights and shadows come out very nicely.

Ikea

Olympus OM-2 with Zuiko MC 50mm 1.4. Fuji Superia 400 film. When I got this back from the lab (Target) it came out way too blue. I tried to reduce the effect of the blue but the image degraded too much.  Finally I found a balance, literally, in Photoshop that got me to this point. I think it’s much better than if it was color correct. The first few times I visited this Ikea, I often got lost. It’s like a maze in there, kinda like an asylum and the color gives it that effect. Heeeere’s Johnny!

Claremont Farmers Market

Olympus OM-2, Zuiko MC 50mm f/1.4. This film I purchased from the 99 cents only store renders the color red very nicely. See how the tomatoes and the raspberries pop?

Ojai

Olympus OM-2, Zuiko MC Auto-W 28mm  f/2.8, Zuiko MC Auto-S 50mm f/1.4.  99¢ Only Store brand color film ISO 200 shot at ISO 100 (for this film I recommend shooting at ISO 50).

I found this film at my local 99¢ Only Store.  It’s called Memories with an ISO speed of 200.  I knew this was not professional but I wondered how it would compare to name brands.  I was hesitant but on the other hand it’s so inexpensive it could come in handy for teaching film photography.  I used it on my visit to Ojai, California, a city just east of Santa Barbara. And in the early morning before the hustle and bustle I walked a mile along Ojai Avenue photographing the charm of the small town.  The film isn’t bad at all. I shoot color negative film at half the ISO rating so I set my Olympus OM-2 at ISO 100 in this case.  When I got it back from the lab, the images came out nicely but a little underexposed.  With a little brightening and a little saturation in Photoshop, the results were really good.  I think I’ll have to shoot this film at ISO 50 next time.  Not bad for everyday picture taking, but it’s way better than most small digital point and shoots.  A little footnote: I had this film processed and scanned at Target.

Gathering for birthdays

I brought along two of my film cameras to my friend’s daughter’s birthday, a Contax 645 with Zeiss 80mm f/2.0 *T and my faithful Olympus OM-2 and assorted lenses.  Unusual of me to also use my Contax 645 for gatherings like this but I couldn’t resist because the kids were so photogenic.  I used a few Fuji 400H and Ilford XP2 Super 400 black and white film.  I was surprised by the results from my Olympus OM-2 together with the Zuiko 85mm f/2.0 (first two photos).  Really sharp.  Just a little more grain than the Contax but that’s to be expected.  I used what remaining light shining through the trees for portraits of the kids.  This is always the opportune times for portraits. Notice I shoot toward the sun and expose for the shadows?
