I was determined to find an exit and could hardly wait to start photographing. I came upon an exit called <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Cima Road</st1:address></st1:street> which happens to be the exit to the Mojave National Preserve. What luck! This natural preserve is sandwiched between the I15, the I40 and the California-Nevada border. Summer temperature ranges between 90-115 degrees, perfect environment for the yucca brevifolio, otherwise known as the Joshua Tree. The temperature readout in my car was 115 degrees. I was so ecstatic to be there I was like a kid in a candy store. For this blog I chose two images that provided a sense of time and place. One image is a Joshua Tree. I felt this photo would be best represented in black and white. I converted it to black and white with a little help from my brother Francis, a Photoshop expert. The other photo is Cima Road which seems to go on forever in the vast open space of the Mojave. I kept this image in color because it presents a real contrast between the blue sky and the earth color of the desert and the brick red asphalt. Click on a photo for a larger view.

As I was passing by a beautiful stretch of desert on the way to Vegas I spotted puffy white clouds across the deep blue sky and I thought how it would make a great desert shot.
